Comparison guide

Shutters vs Blinds

Which is the right window solution for your home in Portugal? We compare light, insulation, durability, cost and resale value.

Introduction

Two solutions, two levels of finish

In Portugal, blinds (roller or venetian) are the most common way to dress a window: affordable, motorisable and discreet. Interior plantation shutters, drawn from the British tradition, are a permanent architectural system with adjustable louvres — closer to a decorative frame than a curtain.

The choice between the two comes down to what you value more: upfront price or long-term performance. This guide compares both systems across the ten criteria that most often decide our clients in the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto.

When blinds make sense

Choose blinds when…

  • Budget is the leading criterion and the solution must be off-the-shelf.
  • The window is temporary (rental, planned renovation).
  • You want smart-home motorisation without touching the frame.
  • The opening is unusual and there is no interior space for folding shutters.

When shutters make sense

Choose shutters when…

  • The house is to live in, let as a holiday rental or sell at a premium.
  • You are on the Algarve coast and want resistance to sun, salt and wind.
  • You want full control of light and privacy without curtains.
  • You value architectural finish and visual consistency across rooms.
  • You want to cut air-conditioning in summer and heating in winter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do shutters fully replace blinds and curtains?

Yes. A good interior shutter does everything a blind does — shading, blackout, privacy — plus insulation and finish. Most of our clients remove blinds and curtains once shutters go in.

Are shutters worth the investment in a holiday home?

They are — especially for short-term rentals. Listing photos with shutters book at higher rates, durability absorbs high-turnover wear, and there are no cords for guests' children.

Do I need to remove the existing blind boxes?

No. We install shutters inside the reveal, leaving the existing blind box inactive or to be removed later. We measure and adapt to any situation.
