Brief
A five-bedroom clifftop villa above Vale Centeanes, refurbished for year-round family use. The brief was to control brutal south-facing light without losing the sea view, and to reclaim the terrace for evening use in every season.
Challenge
The main living wing runs 14 metres along a west-facing façade with floor-to-ceiling glazing. Existing external shading options either blocked the view entirely (roller shutters) or wore out within three summers (fabric awnings). Salt air within 200 m of the Atlantic ruled out standard hardware.
Solution
Marine-grade aluminium plantation shutters throughout the living wing on hidden bi-fold tracks so the panels stack cleanly to the wall when open. A 6×7 m bioclimatic pergola over the terrace with motorised louvres, integrated warm-white LED lighting, retractable ZIP side screens and a rain/wind sensor package. Everything runs off a single wall panel and a phone app.
